Dates : 3rd Jun - 6th Jun
We are on the road. Said goodbye to Genevieve who is looking after Sky our Burmese cat and the townhouse we are renting in Forest Lodge.
We started early this morning picking up the camper trailer in Berrilee at 8am. Then we headed off. Stopping at Yass along the way for a quick break to get to Gundagai.
The Beast & Stoney
This is going to be a diary for Mike & I whilst we are on the trip. We will try to post fairly often, but we already know from what we have planned that some of the locations we are going to have trouble with the internet, or we will have travelled so far that we just might be too tired to post.
For each location - we will put dates, weather, distance and where we are staying. Distance is from last location stayed to next, not including detours along the way.
Gundagai, NSW
Weather - Max 12 to 7 degrees
Distance Travelled - 397km from Berrilee (starting point)
Staying 1 Night, Gundagai Tourist Park
We are driving a decent distance on the first 2 days of our trip, as NSW & Victoria are states we can explore more on a later, more leisurely trip.
We decided to stay at this caravan park, located on the Murrumbidgee River near a beautiful old bridge. The weather has been a bit hit and miss but that's okay.
About Gundagai - inland south-western NSW on the Murrumbidgee River. Some of the things it's famous for are Dog on the Tuckerbox statue and "Along the road to Gundagai", sung by Smoky Dawson, written by Jack O'Hagan in 1922.
North East Victoria Silo Art
Spent the day driving around looking at silo art on our way to Deniliquin, NSW
- Goorambat, Devenish, St James, Tungamah- silo Art Trail. When we got to Deniliquin we found out it also had silo art.
About Deniliquin - located on the Edward River and known as the aquatic playground of the outback. It's also famous for the Ute Muster which happens at the end of September, they have a museum but unfortunately it was closed on the weekend. The UTE muster sounds like fun and a possible future event I would like to go to.. and, it's painted about the person GJ Coles. (You can click on the images to see them bigger).
The Polar Vortex is hitting this area. So it's rather chilly and a little bit wet. However, we have been super lucky that we have been driving or settled in the camper trailer that we haven't noticed (little heater in the camper and electric blanket does wonders in winter). With the change in the weather we decided to give Shepparton a miss and head to Deniliquin. We have realised that we are going to have to make changes to our itinerary because everything changes day by day - but that makes life exciting.
Deniliquin, NSW
Weather - 7 - 15 degrees
Distance Travelled -335km from Gundagai
Staying 2 nights, Big 4
We arrived around four in the afternoon - we had just set up the camper with the annex and started to hear the birds squawking and talking getting ready for bed. The caravan park is on the Edward River which is a branch of the Murray, and this amazing sunset happened for us. (You can click on the images to see them bigger)

Our second day in Deni as the locals call it - we decided to walk around the town and in the nature reserve and then head to Echuca in Victoria for the day (over 70Kms from Deni).
On the way to Echuca you go past a place called Mathoura, it has a fence called the Bra Fence. This fence was put together to raise money for local people with cancer.
We decided after the steam boat ride it was time to head back to Deniliquin for a well earned rest before dinner at the RSL.
Hope you enjoy our "Long Road to Gundagai" and Deniliquin. We think we are going to head to Mildura next, so see you there.
Cheers,
Mike & Michelle
